Narasimha Avatar
Lord Narasimha was the 4th avatar of Lord Maha Vishnu who appeared to kill
the demon Hiranyakasipu. In Maha Vishnu's Varaha avatara the Lord killed
Hiranyakshan, brother of Hiranyakasipu. By this action, Hiranyakasipu got angry
towards Maha Vishnu and decided to take revenge on Maha Vishnu. For this he
took severe penance to pacify Lord Brahma to get the boon of immortality.
Lord Brahma appeared before him and said I myself should die one day and
hence I cannot give the boon of immortality. Hiranyakasipu alternatively, asked
for a boon that "He should not be killed by any human or animal, not in the air
,water or sea, not inside or outside, not during the day or at night, and not by
any astra or sastra(weapon). By attaining this boon from Brahma, he considered
himself immortal and began to ruin the life of all the people in the three
worlds. All demigods and devas went to Maha Vishnu and pleaded for his mercy
to save them from Hiranyakasipu. Maha Vishnu gave them the relief that
Prahlad the son of Hiranyakasipu will be the cause of Hiranyakasipus death. As
years passed Kayadhu, Hiranyakasipu's wife gave birth to Prahlad in the ashram
of Naradha Muni. Sage Naradha was always chanting the names of lord
Narayana and narrating the past times of the Supreme Lord. This was heard by
prahlad even when he was in the womb of his mother. So prahlad was also
always reciting Lord Narayanas names. Hiranyakasipu was disappointed and
decided to send the child to Gurukul, where Canda and Amarka (sons of
Shukracarya) were teachers. He thought they will change his mind. They were
unsuccessful in breaking the solid devotion of Prahlad. Atlast Hiranyakasipu
decided to kill his son by giving poison or drowning him in ocean, throwing him
in to the fire, putting him under the feet of elephant. Maha Vishnu saved him
from all these attempts. Hiranyakasipu became furious and asked Prahlad
"Where is your Narayana, can you show me your Vishnu in this pillar?" Prahlad
said, "My lord Narayana is omnipresent ,yes He is in the pillar!". Hiranyakasipu
hit the pillar with his mace and there came the Lord Narasimha with a
thundering sound, pillar cracked and Maha Vishnu appeared as half-lion and
half-man form, He pulled Hiranyakasipu to his lap, it was 6 o clock neither day
nor night, on the lap - neither air nor water, with his claws - neither astra nor
sastra, on the threshold of the room - neither inside nor outside, and thus
Hiranyakasipu was killed by the Lord Narasimha. To pacify the Lord Prahlad
touched his feet. Lord cannot tolerate when his devotee undergoes so much of
suffering and he will surely come and protect His devotees.

(1) Namas te narasiḿhāya
prahlādāhlāda-dāyine
hiraṇyakaśipor vakṣaḥ-
śilā-ṭańka-nakhālaye
(2) ito nṛsiḿhaḥ parato nṛsiḿho
yato yato yāmi tato nṛsiḿhaḥ
bahir nṛsiḿho hṛdaye nṛsiḿho
nṛsiḿham ādiḿ śaraṇaḿ prapadye
(3) tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-śṛńgaḿ
dalita-hiraṇyakaśipu-tanu-bhṛńgam
keśava dhṛta-narahari-rūpa jaya jagadīśa hare
Translation
(1) I offer my obeisances to Lord Narasimha, who gives joy to Prahlada Maharaja and whose nails are like chisels on the stone like chest of the demon Hiranyakasipu.
(2) Lord Nrsimha is here and also there. Wherever I go Lord Nrsimha is there. He is in the heart and is outside as well. I surrender to Lord Nrsimha, the origin of all things and the supreme refuge.
(3) O Kesava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari, who have assumed the form of half-man, half-lionl All glories to You! Just as one can easily crush a wasp between one's fingernails, so in the same way the body of the wasp like demon Hiranyakasipu has been ripped apart by the wonderful pointed nails on Your beautiful lotus hands.

பகவத் கீதையும் திருநீற்றின் மகிமையும்
எது நடந்ததோ அது நன்றாகவே நடந்தது,
எது நடக்கிறதோ அது நன்றாகவே நடக்கிறது,
எது நடக்க இருக்கிறதோ அதுவும் நன்றாகவே நடக்கும்.
உன்னுடையதை எதை இழந்தாய், எதற்காக அழுகிறாய்?
எதை நீ கொண்டு வந்தாய் அதை நீ இழப்பதற்கு?
எதை நீ படைத்திருந்தாய், அது வீணாவதற்கு?
எதை நீ எடுத்துக்கொண்டாயோ, அது இங்கிருந்தே எடுக்கப்பட்டது,
எதைக் கொடுத்தாயோ, அது இங்கேயே கொடுக்கப்பட்டது.
எது இன்று உன்னுடையதோ அது நாளை மற்றொருவருடையதாகிறது,
மற்றொரு நாள் அது வேறொருவருடையாகும்!
இதுவே உலக நியதியும் எனது படைப்பின் சாராம்சமாகும்.
இவை ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ண பகவான் பகவத் கீதையில் சொல்லுவதாக நாம் அறிவோம்.
இந்த அரிய வாக்குகளில் புதைந்து கிடக்கிற உண்மையை ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால் ஒன்று புரிகிறது - எல்லாம் அவன் செயல், அவனன்றி ஓரணுவும் அசைவதில்லை! இந்த கருத்துக்களுக்கும் நாம் திருநீறு அணிவதற்கும் நெருங்கிய உடன்பாடு இருப்பதாக தெரிகிறது.
சாம்பலின் மற்ற உருவான திருநீறு, சைவ மதத்தில் மிகவும் போற்றப்படுகின்ற ஒன்றாகும். இறை வழிபாடு செய்யும்போது திருநீறு அணிவது சைவ மதத்தைப் போற்றுவோர்களின் வழக்கமாக என்றென்றும் இருந்து வருகிறது. நெற்றியிலும் உடலிலும் திருநீறு பூசுவதால் உள்ளத்திலும் உடலிலும் நேர் அதிர்வு (positive energy) ஏற்படுவதாக அறிவியல் ஆராய்ச்சியும் சொல்வதாக அறிகிறோம்.
காலத்தை வென்ற கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் தனது இந்து மத சொற்பொழிவில் திருநீறு அணிவதற்கு இன்னுமொரு வித்தியாசமான விளக்கம் அளித்திருக்கிறார். என்றோ ஒரு நாள் நம் உடல் இந்த மண்ணில் சாம்பலாகவே போகிறது. திருநீறு அணியும் ஒவ்வொரு வேளையிலும் இதை நினைவில் கொண்டு, ஒருபோதும் தவறு செய்யாமல், வாழ்க்கையை சீராக்குவதற்காக இந்து மதத்தில் விபூதி அணியும் வழக்கத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை அழகாக சொல்லி இருக்கிறார்.
பகவத்கீதையில் சொல்லப்பட்ட அத்தனை தத்துவங்களும் கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசன் திருநீறு பற்றி அளித்த விளக்கமும் ஒரே நோக்கத்துடன் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்தாகவே தெரிகிறது. நிற்பதும் நடப்பதும் அவன் செயலே, அவனன்றி ஓரணுவும் அசையாது என்ற அரிய உண்மையை கீதையின் பொருளாகவேப் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. நமது வாழ்க்கையின் நிரந்தரம் அவன் கையிலேயே இருக்கிறது என்ற தெளிவு கவிஞர் கண்ணதாசனின் மொழிகளில் விளங்குகிறது.
இவற்றை நினைவில் கொண்டு வாழுகின்ற நாளில் நல்லதை மட்டும் நினைத்து, நல்லதை மட்டும் செய்து மகிழ்ச்சியாகவும், மனநிறைவுடனும் வாழ வேண்டும் என்றும் புரிகிறது!
